There ARE comics that fit that mold, and have been. But yes, a lot of times they were focused, or more education and less entertainment. I think the solution is to, well, MAKE YA comics. Not necessarily for print, the overhead for running a webcomic is minimal, outside of the time spent writing and drawing. I am writing a comic coming out soon that is more on the old side of YA, aiming at the mid teens, but I hope girls and women enjoy it as much as boys and guys.

But a lot of parents are iffy about what websites their kids look at. I think a central hub that vets comics, a kinda KeenSpot for YA comics, where parents can get ratings of comics, kids can subscribe to see their favorites, with the kind of print out puzzles and such that The Phoenix has (and when are they selling in the States? I want for my sons!) would be awesome. be a pain to put together, but could be worth it.

Now... who to talk to for rights to graphic novelize old YA novel series. I wanna do the Mcgurk mysteries!

Princess Schminsess! Definitely more up for dinosaur riders, I agree!

You're right that kids can be divided. But I like the idea that something like this could bring them together a bit.

Europe does it brilliant, you're right. And Japan. Why on earth did the UK get so behind on all this I wonder?

As for reprints that would be ace. I wonder who we write to to demand it!

Ah great great! We currently have lot sof girl's *magazines* - Princess this, princess that. Bleh. I'd much rather have read about girl's riding on dinousaurs, that's for sure.

Kids can be very divided though - 'boys are smelly', 'girls are smelly' etc - so some younger readers would love a comic that they best identified with, I feel. Ideally, it would be nice to see a range - boys comics, girls comics, everyone-comics. Europe does it, Japan does it - on that note it was probably why translated shojo manga filled the gap from the early 2000s in bookshops so well.

Randomly, it would be epic to see Jinty/Misty/Bunty reprints in the format of Commando Comic Libraries format by the way. I wonder how they would sell?

There should definitely be lots of comics for people to choose from. That's the point. Lots of good comics, good art, good stories. Therefore no need to market for certain audiences.

The Phoenix is a good example but it doesn't have everything. Of course we need more! Bring on the rest! :)

I don't know. What would be the equivalent of 2000AD be (it was suitable for kids when it came out, or at least was given to quite young kids)? Can a single publication really be for everyone? (I acknowledge the Phoenix is very good, this said).

That's the idea. That people will just read stuff because they like it. And everyone likes different stuff. There are probably boys who like a pink pony too. :)

So glad your daughter loves The Phoenix. It's a good one to grow up with!
